The California Sycamore is a majestic, fast-growing native tree prized for its mottled, peeling bark and massive canopy. It requires ample space to grow and should not be planted near sidewalks or pipes due to its aggressive, large root system. It thrives with deep, regular watering, especially when young, as it naturally grows near streams and riverbeds. Prune in winter while dormant to establish a strong central leader and remove crossing branches. Susceptible to anthracnose (a fungal disease) in wet springs, which causes early leaf drop, but healthy trees usually recover and push new leaves by summer.
