Crape Myrtle is a spectacular deciduous tree known for its explosive summer blooms and stunning exfoliating bark in winter. For maximum flowering, it must be planted in full sun (8+ hours). Water deeply during the summer months to encourage vibrant blooms, though it is surprisingly drought-tolerant once mature. Pruning is critical: do not 'crape murder' by indiscriminately topping the tree! Instead, selectively prune in late winter to remove crossing branches, open up the center for air circulation, and remove old seed pods. This promotes healthy new growth where the flowers will form. Susceptible to powdery mildew in humid, stagnant air-ensure good spacing. Fertilize lightly in early spring; over-fertilizing reduces flowers and pushes excessive leaf growth.
