The Fruitless Olive Tree is a quintessential Mediterranean landscape staple, prized for its silvery-green foliage and sculptural, gnarled trunk as it ages. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and prefers infrequent, deep watering rather than shallow, frequent irrigation, which can cause root rot. It demands excellent drainage and full sun exposure (at least 6-8 hours daily). Because it is a fruitless variety (like 'Swan Hill' or 'Wilsonii'), it produces minimal to no pollen and eliminates the mess of dropping olives on patios or walkways. Prune only to enhance the natural structural shape or remove dead wood, ideally in late winter before the spring growth flush. It requires very little fertilizer; a light application of a low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring is sufficient.
