Protea 'Flame Giant' is a magnificent focal point for drought-tolerant gardens. Like all Proteaceae, it demands extremely well-draining, acidic, and nutrient-poor soil. Do not add compost or phosphorus fertilizers to the planting hole. Water deeply during the first summer to establish the deep taproot, then strictly limit water. Ensure the plant receives good air circulation to prevent fungal leaf spot. Prune spent flowers by cutting the stem back leaving several inches of leafy growth to stimulate new branches.
