Haas Avocado

The Hass Avocado is the most popular avocado variety, producing rich, creamy, pebbly-skinned fruit. Growing avocados requires strict attention to soil drainage-they are highly susceptible to Phytophthora root rot and will die in heavy, waterlogged clay. Plant in a raised mound if drainage is poor. Young trees have extremely sensitive bark and can sunburn easily; it is recommended to paint the trunk with a 50/50 mix of white interior latex paint and water until the canopy provides enough shade. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Avocado roots are shallow, so apply a thick layer of coarse mulch (keeping it away from the trunk) to protect roots and retain moisture. Fertilize with a citrus/avocado specific blend 3-4 times a year, starting in late winter. Protect from frost and strong winds.
