Italian Cypress provides a striking vertical accent, growing very tall but staying extremely narrow. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and prefers infrequent, deep watering. Overwatering or poor drainage is the quickest way to kill this tree, often leading to root rot or spider mite infestations. Plant in full sun for the tightest foliage growth; shady conditions cause the branches to flop open. It requires almost no pruning to maintain its columnar shape, though you can sheer the sides lightly to keep it exceptionally neat. Fertilize very lightly in spring if growth is slow.
