Podocarpus (Fern Pine) is a highly versatile evergreen that can be grown as a specimen tree, a dense privacy hedge, or an espalier. It is relatively slow-growing but incredibly long-lived and durable. It performs best in well-drained, slightly acidic soils and can tolerate a wide range of light conditions, from full sun to deep partial shade. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant. To create a dense hedge, shear the new growth lightly 2-3 times during the growing season. If growing as a tree, selectively prune lower branches to expose the attractive, peeling bark. It is generally pest-free, though occasionally susceptible to aphids on soft new growth. Apply an acid-forming fertilizer in early spring.
